Mexico's most notorious drug lord, Joaquín Guzmán Loera, better known as El Chapo, was recaptured following an intense firefight between Mexican Marines and Chapo's goons in Sinaloa, Mexico, last Friday. Although Mexican officials claimed that the entire operation to recapture El Chapo after he escaped from prison for the second time was planned and executed by Mexico, multiple sources report to SOFREP that American law enforcement officers and JSOC operators were involved in the mission.

WNU Editor: SOFREP is a good and reliable source for news. If US Special Forces were involved in the hunt (and death) of Pablo Escobar, I can only assume that the same must have happened in the hunt for Joaquín Guzmán. My guess is that we will know the truth one day .... but not today.

Kelsey Munro, Sydney Morning Herald: Why would North Korea give up its nuclear weapons?

As the world reacts with universal condemnation to the bomb test conducted by North Korea last week, the South, China, the United States and the United Nations echo the same line of condemnation and bluff: North Korea must give up its nuclear weapons program. Sanctions will be aggressively pursued. China calls for the resumption of the stalled six-party talks, which are based on the notion that North Korea will trade away its nuclear weapons in return for other benefits.

There is an obvious question no one seems to want to answer. Why would North Korea give up its nukes?

FOX News: ISIS burns fighters alive for letting Ramadi fall

ISIS fighters who fled to the terror group's Iraqi stronghold of Mosul after being defeated in Ramadi were burned alive in the town square, sources told FoxNews.com, in an unmistakable message to fighters who may soon be defending the northern city from government forces.

Several residents of Mosul recounted the grisly story for stateside relatives, describing the deadly reception black clad jihadists got when they made it to Mosul, some 250 miles north of the city retaken by Iraqi forces operating with cover from U.S. air power.

CNN: First on CNN: U.S. bombs 'millions' in ISIS currency holdings

Washington (CNN)In an extremely unusual airstrike, the U.S. dropped bombs Sunday in central Mosul, Iraq, destroying a building containing huge amounts of cash ISIS was using to pay its troops and for ongoing operations, two U.S. defense officials told CNN.

The officials could not say exactly how much money was there or in what currency, but one described it as "millions."

Two 2,000-pound bombs destroyed the site quickly. But the longstanding impact may be even more significant. The officials said the U.S. plans to strike more financial targets like this one to take away ISIS's ability to function as a state-like entity.

Daily Mail: ISIS claim responsibility for attack on Baghdad shopping mall in which 18 people were killed and 50 injured after gunmen detonated car bomb and took hostages

Gunmen killed at least 18 people and took an estimated 75 more hostage after blowing up a car bomb and storming a shopping mall in eastern Baghdad.

However, Iraqi commandos landed on the roof, where they clashed with attackers inside, killing two and arresting another four.

sylva on bayelsa pollsThe candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Bayelsa supplementary election, Timipre Sylva, has described the recently concluded election as a conspiracy against democracy.

In an interview with Channels Television on Monday in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, Mr Sylva accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of conspiring with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led-government in the state to rig the polls.

“I have always raised this complain that the INEC in Bayelsa was set up as part of the PDP rigging machine and as an APC candidate we were contesting with that PDP rigging machine.

“If you look at the whole process from the beginning, they set us up. The ad-hoc staff were appointed from the state university and they were changed with impunity. In fact, the last set of the SPOs that went for the elections were changed on the morning of the election because they were to serve a particular purpose.

“I feel very sad that in this day and age, this is what we get in Bayelsa,” he said condemning the process of the election.

Mr Sylva accused the PDP of rigging the election and said he would explore all legal avenues to protest the result of the polls.

Teresa Welsh, US News and World Report: The Middle East Blame Game

Iran and other members of the Arab world differ on who's at fault for the region's turmoil.

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif over the weekend blamed Saudi Arabia for destabilizing the Middle East – an accusation shot right back at Tehran by Arab League countries who said the Islamic Republic was responsible for "sowing sectarian strife."

Zarif, writing Sunday in The New York Times, said Saudi Arabia has been responsible for increasing confrontation in the region out of fear that Iran's normalizing ties with the rest of the world would expose Riyadh's "active sponsorship of violent extremism." He said last year's completion of a deal to curb his country's nuclear ambitions in exchange for sanctions relief brought the hope that nations would be free to focus on "the serious challenge of extremism that is ravaging our region – and the world."

The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been drawn to a statement by the National Legal Adviser of the People's Democratic Party, PDP, Mr. Victor Kwon, alleging compromise and political witch hunts in the release of a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Brigadier-General Jafaru Isa, (retd) by the EFCC.

In the statement made available to the media yesterday, Kwon alleged that: " The release of Jafaru Isa, a known associate of the President and chieftain of the APC, eight hours after his arrest, while our Spokesman remains in detention even when the two are being investigated over the same allegation, clearly shows that the President Buhari-led APC government is not fighting corruption but using the much-hyped crusade as a cover to prosecute PDP leaders and decimate the opposition, a project the EFCC has clearly yielded itself as a willing tool".
While the EFCC will not wish to join issues with Kwon in this regard, it is important that the public is presented with the facts regarding the release of Isa. The APC chieftain was arrested for his involvement in the arms procurement scam,  to the tune of N170,000,000( One Hundred and Seventy Million Naira).  Upon his arrest,  the retired General admitted receiving the said sum from Dasuki and immediately refunded a total sum of N100,000, 000( One Hundred Million Naira only), with an undertaking to refund the balance of N70,000,000( Seventy Million Naira only) in two weeks. Besides, his health deteriorated after he was taken into custody. These two factors prompted the offer of bail to the suspect.

The grant of bail by the Commission does not amount to an exoneration of the suspect.

Unlike Isa, Metuh, who is exposed to the tune of N1.2Billion in the arms scandal  has shown no readiness to refund any amount of money to the EFCC, nor signed any undertaking to do so at a future date. Metuh, contrary to claims by his party, is not being detained illegally as the commission obtained a valid court order to hold him.

There is no basis for a witch-hunt of Metuh. Nigerians are assured that he will be released once he satisfies the condition for the discretion to be exercised in his favor. Until that is done, the commission will not be intimidated or stampeded by any campaign of calumny that is intended to detract it.

Kwon claimed rather ridiculously that: "We have information of the marching order from the Presidency for the immediate  release of the President's associate  and that his issue is one of the major reasons for the repeated visits of the EFCC Chairman to the Presidential Villa within the period  of his arrest..."

This is far from the truth. No one micro manages the EFCC, not even the president. The EFCC is focussed and will remain un-deterred in its task of ridding the nation of all forms of corrupt practices.

There is no modicum of truth in allegations of selectivity, bias and witch hunt and the general public is enjoined to ignore such claims.

CBN on Dangote RefineryThe Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefile, has pledged the Apex Bank’s support for the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Complex in Lagos.

The CBN Chief, who paid a visit to the construction site for the 14 billion dollar project on Monday, said that such support would come through the provision of Forex.

He went on to laud the visionary leadership of Aliko Dangote for a project, which is aimed at making Nigeria an exporter of fertilizer and finished petroleum products.

“Indeed, people talk about allocating Forex to Dangote Refinery and I must say that we need to support companies like this.

“When he contemplated this project, he came with a bill of about four billion Dollars for the importation of the equipment before I got to CBN and the CBN said that, we want you to commit to the importation of the equipment and we will stagger repayment and support you by providing foreign exchange for this and that is what we are doing.

“That is the kind of support we can give to people like this, who are contemplating moving Nigeria from an importer of all these products to an exporter,” the Central Bank’s boss stressed.

In his speech, the CEO of Dangote Refinery said that the company, as at January 11, could serve all the West African markets.

“We are also filling up the gas, which is right there in the ground because we are doing a gas pipeline through the sea – 550km each two lines which is about 1,100 from Borno to Lagos and that will give three billion cubic feet of gas.

“At the moment, the entire consumption of gas in Nigeria is about one billion. So, we are going to triple that, all at a stretch,” he said.
