700 Illegal migrants Repatriated From Gabon

Illegal MigrantsAbout 700 illegal migrants mainly from Nigeria, Mali, Togo, Senegal, Niger Republic, Guinea Conakry and other African countries have been repatriated from Gabon to Nigeria for not having valid traveling documents.

Taking delivery of the deportees at the Inland Waterways Jetty in Calabar, the Cross River State Capital, the state Comptroller of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Funke Adeuyi, disclosed that the deportees arrived the country on December 25 and have been under their custody.

Adeuyi maintained that, following the end, the next line of action is to ensure that the migrants are transported through Nigeria to the nearest land, leading to their countries of origin which has been taken care of.

According to her, their stay through the past days has incurred high cost in their feeding and welfare, with support from just few individuals.

Also speaking, the Consul General of Senegal, Babacar Mbodj, whose nationals have consistently fallen pry of deportation, assured of government’s response in putting an end to such ordeals.

He thanked the Nigerian government for its show of brotherhood to the deportees.

In August, about 500 illegal migrants was repatriated from the same set of countries for the same reason.

kwaraThe Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, has allayed the fear of reduction of minimum wage for civil servants in the state.

The governor at a function in Ilorin, the state capital, said despite the lean purse of the state government, the wages of civil servants will not be slashed.

He however announced the plan to introduce Contributory Pension Scheme in the state, as the current financial challenges will not allow the state to be the sole contributor again.

The governor had earlier presented the state budget with an estimate of over 1.1 billion Naira.

The estimate is a decrease of over 1.5 billion Naira  above the 2015 revised appropriation which represents 1.3% decrease.

EuropeIt’s less than 24 hours to the New Year major cities in Europe are intensifying security due to possible terror plots.

New Year fireworks and festivities have been cancelled in the Belgian capital, Brussels because of an alert.

Extra measures will also be in place in cities including Paris, London, Berlin and Moscow.

Meanwhile in Turkey, security services said they have prevented a major plot to attack Ankara.

Earlier this week, Austrian Police claimed a “friendly intelligence service” had tipped them off that major European capitals were at risk of being attacked during the holiday.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says President Muhammadu Buhari's responses at the Wednesday Presidential Media Chat were not only embarrassing but also further exposed his undemocratic character as an unrepentant tyrant who has no regard for the rule of law and the self-worth of Nigerian citizens.



The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, on Thursday also said the President confirmed his partisanship in the much-vaunted war against corruption by openly absolving his ministers and party members of corrupt practices.

"Whilst we restate our respect for the person and office of the President, we note that President Buhari bared his true colours to the world as an unrepentant tyrant. Today, the world is no longer in doubt as to who is behind the prevailing recklessness, abuse of rights of citizens and outright flouting of judicial pronouncements by security agencies.

"A situation where the President openly pronounced persons facing trial guilty and sanctioned their continued incarceration despite being granted bail by the courts, presents a dangerous fascist practice obtainable only in totalitarian societies like Mussolini's Italy, Hitler's Germany, Idi Amin's Uganda and General Than Shwe's Burma.

"This extremely shocking dictatorial tendency being brazenly exhibited by the President in total disdain for our laws and judicial institutions portends great danger for our democracy and constitutionally-guaranteed rights of the people, and should be resisted by the citizens before it festers.

"The scorn for the principle of separation of powers, especially the independence of the legislature, is further manifested in the declared craving to regulate the funding and running of the National Assembly, a matter constitutionally vested outside the jurisdiction of the executive. We are most uncomfortable about his attempt at trying to whip up public sentiments against an independent arm of government, especially the one vested with the constitutional power of appropriation.

"Following from the foregoing, therefore, it may be necessary to suspend the application of our Constitution and allow the President to operate as maximum ruler for four years after which the nation can return to a democracy.

"On the issue of the Chibok girls, President Buhari's embarrassing declaration of seeking information on the whereabouts and state of the girls betrays an obvious insincerity which is in total conflict with his campaign promises in that regard. Thus by this declaration, our dear President has accepted failure on this issue and should therefore apologise to Nigerians for all the insults, abuse and aspersions cast on the past administration by himself and the leadership of his political party.

"On the issue of devaluation of the naira, there is an obvious conflict between the budget speech wherein the president stated that the government is assessing the foreign exchange rate with a view to attracting foreign investments and his categorical pronouncement during the media chat that the naira would not be devalued. We invite Nigerians to note that the president obviously does not understand the currency that applies in the devaluation of the naira (laugh out loud).

"Furthermore, Nigerians were shocked by the President's labeling Nigerians as 'very difficult lot' while responding to questions on the strategy to be adopted in implementing his promised N5,000 social welfare package.

"This unhealthy portrayal of the citizens by the very father of the nation, who has remained unrelenting in de-marketing his country through unguarded statements, is indeed a great disservice to Nigeria and its international image. Consequently, we reject this negative labeling of our citizens and reiterate our confidence in them, especially the millions who remain honest, hardworking and credible.

"Finally, Nigerians must take copious note of the fact that the President gave no inspiring answers to questions pertaining to his campaign promises, the fight against insurgency and rescue of the Chibok girls, the poor state of the naira, sudden plunging of the economy under his watch, and the gradual loss of democratic rights and freedom."

Brussels has cancelled its official celebrations, Paris called off an annual fireworks display on the Champs-Élysées and London increased the numbers of firearms officers on the streets as authorities across the world stepped up security measures for New Year's Eve.

Belgian police detained six people during house searches in Brussels on Thursday in an investigation into an alleged plot to carry out an attack in the city. Earlier in the week two other people were arrested on suspicion of preparing attacks on "emblematic sites" in Brussels during the celebrations. An 11-year-old girl who was so ill she could barely swallow was found to have a giant hairball weighing more than a kilo in her stomach. The unnamed girl arrived at a hospital in Taraz, in southern Kazakhstan's Jambyl region, suffering from such a severe stomach ache she was unable to eat or drink.

Surgeons decided to operate on her immediately to find out what was wrong, and were shocked when they discovered the huge ball of hair in her digestive system.

They found 17cm  (6.7in) of hairball filling her stomach and 35cm (13.8 inches) protruding into her bowel.

Her parents admitted they had often spotted her chewing her long hair, but said they didn't know this habit was unhealthy. They also had no idea she was swallowing the hair she chewed off, a condition known as tricophagia. 

The girl was diagnosed with Rapunzel syndrome, a rare condition in which a hairball (called a trichobezar) becomes stuck in the stomach, with its tail in the colon.

As the hairball grows, it can cause ulcers, tear the stomach and bowel and block the digestive system.


The syndrome is rare, with less than 120 cases reported in the medical literature, and it almost always affects young women.

canada-airlineAt least 21 people have been sent to the hospital after a Canada-bound airline experienced severe turbulence.

The Air Canada flight from Shanghai to Toronto was diverted to Calgary for an emergency landing after the incident.

Eight passengers suffered neck and back injuries, as hospital officials say all the victims are in stable condition.

Some of the passengers narrated their experience.

The Boeing 777 with 332 passengers and 19 crew members landed at Calgary without further incident.

Bill-CosbyUS comedian, Bill Cosby, has been charged with aggravated indecent assault done in 2004.

It is the first time the 78-year-old has been charged with any offence after months of accusations.

Andrea Constand said she was drugged then assaulted at the Philadelphia home of the former US television star.

Dozens of women have accused Cosby of sexual assault, dating back to the 1970s, but he has denied wrongdoing.

Mr Cosby made no comment as he arrived at court to be formally charged. He did not enter a plea at the hearing where a judge set bail at $1m.

Later, his lawyer said that he would “mount a vigorous defence against this unjustified charge”.

police-interior ministerThe Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, has sympathized with the government and citizens of Anambra State over the gas plant explosion that claimed several lives and injured many in Nnewi.

The Interior Minister who visited the state assured Governor Willie Obiano that more proactive measures will be adopted to prevent future re -occurrence.

Dambazau was accompanied by the Comptroller General of Fire Service and the Comptroller General of the Civil Defense.

The explosion at a gas plant belonging to the Intercorp Oil Limited, a subsidiary of Chicason Group, claimed eight lives and destroyed nearby houses.

Complaints, blames and confusion by some residents also trailed the incident.

While some of the residents in the area complained that the site of the gas plant was abnormal, others blamed the company's activities for the ugly incident.

dprThe Akure office of the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) covering Ondo and Ekiti States have tracked 15 filling stations in Ondo State and 14 in Ekiti State that were selling petrol above the official price and auctioned the product at the official rate of 87 Naira per litre for customers.

The operation which started in Akure, Ondo State Capital, continued to Ikere- Ekiti in Ekiti State where the team of officials of the DPR, led by the Operatios Controller of DPR in Ondo/Ekiti States, Wale Oseni.

Members of the public in both states had been complaining about the fuel marketers who either hoard, inflate the price or selling for as high as 140 Naira per litre.

Two stations were sealed in Ikere and Ado-Ekiti for hoarding the product, while none was sealed in Akure.

Filling stations such as NNPC, Oando, Forte and Master Energy, who were selling at inflated prices, were monitored to sell at the official price in Akure.
